QLD Smoke Alarm Legislation
The changes to Queensland smoke alarm legislation will affect all rental properties and properties from 2022 and owner-occupied properties by 2027. According to the legislation, smoke alarms must be installed on each storey of the dwelling,
- In each bedroom
- In hallways that connect bedrooms and the rest of the dwelling
- Between the bedrooms and other parts of the storey
Smoke alarms in all dwellings must be :
- Photoelectric
- Not contain an ionisation sensor
- Be less than 10 years old
- Should operate when tested
- Should be connected with every other smoke alarm in the dwelling so they all activate together
Photoelectric smoke alarms are better at detecting smouldering fires. House fires usually start as smouldering fires which mean there is more smoke and less flame.
Photoelectric alarms can sense light - when smoke enters the chamber, it gets refracted and hits the sensor triggering the alarm. When one alarm detects smoke, it triggers all the other alarms alerting the residents to vacate the property.

NSW Smoke Alarm Legislation
The NSW legislation states that smoke alarms should be installed at every level of the home. Whether it is an owner-occupied home, rented property or any other residential building, smoke alarms should be in working order. Fire and Rescue NSW recommends people to opt for higher level of protection.
The alarms should be installed in hallways near bedrooms and also on each level of the house.
Batteries should be replace every year and smoke alarms should be replaced within 10 years of manufacture ( or earlier, if it is specified by the manufacturer).
